Backdrop of the historic centre of Nuremberg

Pronounced sense of justice at a historic location

Nuremberg is an urban district in the Bavarian region of Central Franconia, and, with more than 500,000 inhabitants, the second largest city in Bavaria. Together with the neighbouring cities of Fuerth, Erlangen and Schwabach, Nuremberg is the economic and cultural centre of Northern Bavaria.

History

As the scene of the famous Nuremberg Trials - from November 1945 onwards, the Allies tried the major German war criminals here - Nuremberg made legal history immediately after the Second World War. After the inglorious role which the city had previously played during the Nazi tyranny, it accrued a pronounced sense of justice for the observation of human rights. Today, Nuremberg therefore feels a special obligation to play an active role in their implementation.

City of human rights

For this purpose, the city for instance inaugurated the "Way of Human Rights", a memorial for human dignity, and built the Documentation Centre Rally Grounds. Since 1995, the Nuremberg International Human Rights Award is presented to persons who have achieved outstanding merits in this area.
