Knowledge of foreign languages in Turkey

Knowledge of foreign languagesis naturally more prevalent in cities than in rural areas and also exists more in younger than in older people. English is the leading foreign language, followed by German. Knowledge of other languages such as French or Italian is rare.

Knowledge of foreign languages has often been obtained during extended stays abroad (especially in Germany and in the USA). In Istanbul alone, more than one million people are believed to speak German.

a) English

according to statistics from 1997, 8.4 % of Turks in Turkey speak English
